BOLA MUSIWA

  • You are indeed a multifaceted woman, judging by your rich profile. Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a pastor, counselor and psychotherapist? How did the journey start for you?

My journey to becoming a pastor, counselor, and psychotherapist began at 14 when I first had a vision of my future. Despite my aspirations, life’s challenges diverted my path, presenting numerous hardships that tested my resilience. However, my faith provided me the strength and guidance to navigate these difficulties. This early period of my life was marked by a deep-seated calling to serve and support others, eventually leading me to pursue a Master of Divinity degree.

Earning my Master of Divinity degree was a transformative experience. It provided me with a strong theological foundation and essential pastoral counseling skills. During my studies, I also took on roles in administration and accounting. These roles enriched my understanding of organizational dynamics and the importance of holistic support systems in addressing people’s needs. My academic and professional experiences during this time laid the groundwork for my future endeavors in pastoral counseling and psychotherapy.

Over the next two decades, I immersed myself in pastoral counseling. This period was profoundly fulfilling as I provided spiritual guidance and support to individuals facing various life challenges. My work in the ministry allowed me to connect deeply with people, understand their struggles, and offer hope and healing. These experiences helped others and facilitated significant personal growth and a deepening of my faith.

Recognizing the need for more specialized skills to address complex mental health issues, I decided to expand my expertise beyond pastoral counseling. I became a Registered Psychotherapist, furthering my education with certifications in Life Coaching, Gottman’s Couple Therapy (Levels 1 and 2), DBT, and as a Prepare Enrich facilitator. Additionally, I obtained a Trauma Violence Informed Approach Certificate, reflecting my commitment to providing sensitive and effective care to those affected by trauma.

Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to supporting marginalized and vulnerable populations. I received specialized training to perform mental health evaluations and assessments for refugee claims, pre-removal risk assessments, and Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) applications. This work is incredibly rewarding as it allows me to help individuals present compelling evidence regarding their mental health needs and the potential risks they face if returned to their country of origin. I also attend Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) hearings upon request, providing support during these critical and often stressful proceedings.

In addition to my counseling and psychotherapy practice, I have had the privilege of sharing my insights as a guest lecturer at McMaster University. Teaching future professionals in the field has been an enriching experience, allowing me to contribute to the development of compassionate and skilled counselors and therapists. This role has been a platform for me to impart knowledge and inspire the next generation of mental health professionals.

Driven by my own experiences of overcoming adversity, I founded Trash to Treasure Ministries. This initiative aims to reach out to the broken, offering them a path to healing and transformation. My journey through trauma, stereotypes, stigmatization, and grief has shaped my approach to ministry, emphasizing resilience, faith, and the power of personal transformation. Through Trash to Treasure Ministries, I strive to help others turn their trials into triumphs, much like I have in my own life.

My philosophy is grounded in the belief that everyone has the potential to rise above their circumstances and achieve greatness. I am passionate about helping individuals break free from destructive patterns, insecurity, and feelings of unworthiness. My faith in God and the resilience of the human spirit inspire me to offer hope and healing to those facing life’s challenges. I firmly believe that with the right support and guidance, people can overcome their difficulties and lead meaningful, fulfilling lives.

My journey is ongoing, and I continue to grow, learn, and evolve. I am committed to serving others, guided by my faith and a deep desire to make a positive impact. Whether through pastoral counseling, psychotherapy, or ministry work, my mission is to restore hope, break barriers, and help individuals embrace their true potential. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story. I hope it inspires others to pursue their calling and believe in the transformative power of faith, resilience, and compassion.

As a counselor and psychotherapist, my approach to working with clients from diverse backgrounds and experiences is rooted in empathy, cultural sensitivity, and individualized care. Understanding and respecting each client’s unique cultural background, beliefs, and values is fundamental to my practice. This involves a commitment to continuous learning, staying informed about different cultures, and being aware of the unique challenges individuals from diverse backgrounds may face. Building trust and rapport with clients is crucial for effective therapy. I prioritize establishing this trust by being authentic, empathetic, and fully present during our sessions. Every client is unique, and their experiences are shaped by various factors such as culture, family, and personal history. Therefore, I tailor my therapeutic approach to meet the specific needs and goals of each individual, using a variety of therapeutic techniques and frameworks that best suit their circumstances.

Many clients from diverse backgrounds may have experienced trauma, discrimination, or systemic injustice. I incorporate trauma-informed care principles into my practice, ensuring that I approach each client with sensitivity to their potential trauma and its impact on their mental health. This approach helps create a safe space for clients to explore and address their trauma without fear of re-traumatization. Additionally, part of my role involves advocating for my clients’ needs and rights, especially those from marginalized or underserved communities. I empower my clients by helping them recognize their strengths, build resilience, and develop coping strategies to navigate their challenges.

To provide the best possible care, I engage in ongoing education and training in culturally competent practices, diversity, and inclusion. • Who are your role models, how have they inspired your journey and the woman that you are today?

My journey has been profoundly influenced by several role models who have inspired me through their strength, compassion, and dedication. The most important role model to me is Jesus Christ. I am a devout believer, and my faith has greatly shaped me into who I am today. Jesus’ teachings of love, forgiveness, and service to others serve as the foundation of my personal and professional life. His example of unwavering faith, humility, and compassion in the face of adversity has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance.

My faith in Jesus Christ has been a guiding light through the various challenges and trials I have faced. His message of hope and redemption has given me the strength to overcome personal struggles and the courage to help others do the same. The principles of empathy, kindness, and selflessness that Jesus embodied are central to my approach as a counselor and psychotherapist. I strive to emulate His example by creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment for my clients, where they feel valued and understood.

Jesus’ commitment to serving the marginalized and oppressed has also profoundly impacted my work with diverse populations. His teachings remind me of the importance of advocating for justice and equality, and they inspire me to provide compassionate care to those who have faced trauma, discrimination, or systemic injustice. My faith motivates me to empower my clients, helping them recognize their inherent worth and potential, and to support them in their journey towards healing and personal growth.

In addition to Jesus Christ, other role models such as my parents, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa have also influenced my journey. However, it is my faith in Jesus that forms the cornerstone of my life and work. His life and teachings continue to guide me, offering a profound sense of purpose and direction. By following His example, I aim to make a positive impact on the lives of those I serve, helping them find hope, resilience, and the strength to overcome their challenges.

These role models have inspired me to become the woman I am today by teaching me the importance of resilience, compassion, and the power of using one’s experiences to make a positive impact on others. Their lives and legacies continue to guide my journey, both personally and professionally. They have taught me that with the right support and guidance, people can overcome their difficulties and lead meaningful, fulfilling lives. My mission is to restore hope, break barriers, and help individuals embrace their true potential, and I am committed to serving others, guided by my faith and a deep desire to make a positive impact.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story. I hope it inspires others to pursue their calling and believe in the transformative power of faith, resilience, and compassion.

  • Looking at your role as a mother, pastor, author, counselor, psychotherapist and philanthropist. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance while juggling around all these?

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance while juggling the roles of mother, pastor, author, counselor, psychotherapist, and philanthropist requires intentional planning and self-care. I prioritize my responsibilities by creating a structured schedule that allocates specific times for work, family, and personal activities, ensuring each area of my life receives the attention it deserves. Delegation and a strong support system are crucial; I rely on family, colleagues, and friends to share responsibilities and provide support.

Self-care is essential, and I make time for activities that rejuvenate me, including exercise, healthy eating, adequate sleep, and spiritual practices like prayer and meditation. Flexibility is key, allowing me to adapt to unexpected events and changes in priorities without feeling overwhelmed. I set realistic goals to prevent burnout and ensure steady progress, and I prioritize quality time with my children, creating meaningful connections and emotional support. I manage my responsibilities more effectively by integrating my roles and finding synergies between them. Regular reflection and seeking professional help when needed also help me maintain balance and navigate the challenges of balancing multiple roles.

  • Beyond your personal and professional success, how do you leverage your skills and experiences to contribute to the advancement of women in Africa?

My work is grounded in a comprehensive strategy that includes counseling, psychotherapy, and ministry, allowing me to offer education and mentorship through targeted workshops and coaching. These initiatives are designed to empower women by providing them with crucial knowledge and skills needed for both personal and professional development.

My background in trauma-informed care is particularly valuable in supporting mental health and recovery. By collaborating with local organizations, I can offer specialized counseling services that address the unique needs of women who have experienced trauma. This collaborative approach ensures that the support provided is both effective and culturally sensitive.

In addition to direct support services, I am actively engaged in advocacy efforts to address systemic issues impacting women. This involves working with local and international partners to promote gender equity and elevate women’s voices in discussions about policy and social change. My goal is to contribute to creating a more equitable society by addressing and challenging the barriers that women face.

Building networks and sharing resources are also central to my strategy. Through writing, speaking engagements, and other platforms, I aim to inspire and educate women, expanding their access to information and support. I actively contribute to local initiatives and community projects, recognizing the importance of grassroots involvement in driving meaningful change.

Encouraging entrepreneurship is another key aspect of my approach. By supporting women in starting and growing their own businesses, I help foster economic opportunities and self-reliance. This empowerment is crucial for building sustainable futures and enhancing economic stability for women and their communities.

Refined Gold is one of our specific initiatives, dedicated to supporting widows, single parents, and children in both Canada and Nigeria. Through this program, we provide essential support, resources, and opportunities to these vulnerable groups, aiming to make a positive impact on their lives and well-being.

Additionally, I have developed the THRIVING HOPE initiative, a ten-phase recovery program for victims of domestic violence. This comprehensive plan is designed to help survivors heal and thrive after abuse, offering structured support and guidance throughout their recovery journey. By addressing various aspects of healing, THRIVING HOPE aims to foster resilience and personal growth, empowering individuals to rebuild their lives and achieve their full potential.
